The Appalatian Trail - Hiking and Visitors Information

I grew up in southern Pennsylvania near Gettysburg. A lot of the time of my youth was spent wandering around in the Appalatian mountains, particularly on the Appalatian Trail. It was a great place to grow up and it taught me a lot about nature and keeping a simple life. I still do a day hike every time I visit the area, often with one of my sons. It's a great way to get to know each other a little better while you are out in nature, enjoying the quiet and solitude.

The Appalatian Trail spans some 2000 miles from Maine to Georgia. The place where I grew up was very close to the mid point on the Pennsylvania, Maryland border. There are a lot of people that want to hike the trail from end to end but it takes a special kind of person with a lot of fortitude to be able to accomplish it. If you decide to hike the trail you should make sure that you have plenty of boots. Some of the terrain that you will come across will wear your boots out quickly. Many hikers mail boots to themselves with instructions for the Postmaster to hold them for a trail hiker. They are used to that sort of thing.

I hope that you take the time to hike at least a little of the trail. Enjoy the sights and the lack of society sounds that you will come across. Take your time and take lots of pictures of the things that you will be coming across. Make sure that you have a good trail map and a lot of camping gear to make your hike successful. Map your trip out well in advance and make sure that you don't take on more than you are able to do or you will not reach your destination on time. Above all, have fun and enjoy nature.
